What is Pilates and Why Physiotherapist Led?

Pilates is a low impact whole body and mind exercise which focuses on building strength and stability from the centre outwards and is a safe exercise for almost everyone.  Physiotherapist’s knowledge of anatomy and pathologies as well as human movement and exercise progression leaves us well placed to provide safe yet challenging classes which can be adapted to each individual’s needs. By focusing on abdominal, lower back and gluteal muscles as well as overall ‘core stability’ Pilates can help with back and pelvic pain, recurrent injuries, body awareness and general well being.  As well as being rehabilitative Pilates can also improve sports performance and prevent injury.

Each matwork class begins with a warm up in standing then we move down onto mat to continue with exercises aimed at strengthening, mobility and flexibility before finishing with a cool down which includes a range of stretching exercises. We focus on posture, breathing, control and efficiency of movement. Each class uses small equipment such as weighted balls and resistance bands to progress and vary the exercises.

Pilates during Pregnancy

Small group classes using modified Pilates exercises to maintain strength, improve posture, reduce or prevent back and pelvic pain and maintain pelvic floor and overall core strength. Alongside the exercises and relaxation we discuss various topics such as looking after your abdominals, pelvic floor and back and preparation for labour and motherhood. It is also an opportunity to get to know other mums-to-be and take some time for yourself at this exciting and new time of your life.

Postnatal Pilates with Baby

Pilates exercises are a perfect way to begin to exercise again after pregnancy and delivery. The classes are small in numbers to ensure the exercises are appropriate to your level. The exercise aim to improve overall strength and posture, with a focus on pelvic floor and abdominals and the changes your body goes through during pregnancy and birth. Alongside the exercises we discuss various topics such as abdominal separation, pelvic floor, relaxation and the challenges of motherhood. It is also an opportunity to get to know other new mums and take some time to do something for you at this new and exciting, but often challenging time of your life. Each class ends with the opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee and a chat.

Pilates for Children and Young People

Pilates is also great for children and young people whether they are 5 year olds still developing coordination or balance; 10 year olds who love to take part in sport but could do with some help developing control and stability of their movements; 12 year olds who aren’t participating in as much exercise as they should or 16 year olds trying to deal with exam stress, adolescent changes to their bodies and lacking in body confidence, Pilates can help.

In the younger years classes we go on an adventure with or bodies and our imaginations.  We use the principles of Pilates whilst keeping the exercises fun but challenging. As the children get older the class begins to look more like an adult class but still with plenty of fun along the way. Each class ends with a relaxation time.

From August 2019 I will be providing Pilates to Primary age children in Aberdeenshire through the Active School Programme. I am also available for one off sessions in schools and nurseries as well as other youth groups

1:1 Pilates Sessions

A group class isn’t for everyone.  If you would prefer to have a 1:1 session initially to build up your confidence, or perhaps a block of 1:1 sessions then this can be done in my clinic in Oldmeldrum or in the comfort of your own home, as long as you are within a reasonable distance. Please get in contact for availability and prices (contact form)
